The Challenge
As construction ramped up on the Kogan Creek Hydrogen and Battery Project, reliable communication became a critical requirement, not only for productivity but also for worker safety in a high-risk environment.
The client required a secure, high-penetration communications system that could operate reliably in a hazardous, high-voltage environment with an explosive risk potential.
Before engaging Comtel, there was no suitable communications infrastructure in place. The existing system did not meet the strict safety and environmental standards required, and the site’s remote location only added to the complexity. Any new solution needed to deliver instant, secure, and site-wide communication with redundancy and local support, without relying on third-party networks.
Comtel’s Solution
Comtel supplied and commissioned a Motorola Solutions digital (DMR2) two-way radio system built to IECEx international standards, enabling safe operation in a hazardous, high-voltage environment with an explosive risk potential.
The system was carefully designed to:
- Deliver secure, encrypted communications with no risk of interference
- Provide full site coverage, including high-voltage and remote areas
- Operate on redundant power supplies for high availability
- Be fully compliant with all safety and environmental regulations
After a successful engagement on the adjacent Kogan Creek Power Station project, the client once again turned to Comtel—this time for the Kogan Creek Battery & Hydrogen project. The solution mirrored an existing Comtel-supplied system already in use at the power station, ensuring full compatibility while extending functionality.
Comtel also provided readily available spare parts and designed the system with future expansion in mind, supporting the evolving needs of the project.
Despite significant supply chain challenges due to COVID-related lockdowns and global electronic shortages, Comtel delivered the project on time, in line with the client’s construction schedule.

The Result
With the new communications system in place, the Kogan Creek Hydrogen and Battery Project now operates with:
- Instant, reliable communications across the entire site
- Improved worker safety and emergency response capabilities
- A secure, encrypted system that doesn’t rely on external networks
- Ongoing local support and maintenance through a Comtel support agreement
Today, the system includes a terminal at the security hut for real-time communication monitoring and alerts, ensuring the right people are reached when it matters most.
Comtel’s long-standing relationship with the site, spanning over 20 years, gave the client confidence in both the technology and the team. What began as a complex problem was ultimately solved with a simple, robust solution, built to last
