The Challenge
St Paul de Chartres, a large aged care facility in Brisbane with 98 residential care beds and 96 independent living units, faced ongoing connectivity issues. Reliable internet and phone services were essential for residents to stay connected with their families and access online services. However, the facility struggled with outdated infrastructure, inconsistent service, and complex telecommunications accounts that were difficult to manage.
The goal was to streamline operations, reduce reliance on multiple external service providers, and ensure a seamless, high-quality connectivity experience for all residents.
Comtel's Solution
Comtel, which was already providing telephone services for the facility, was chosen to lead a major IT infrastructure upgrade. The project involved:
- Installing dedicated CAT6 cabling throughout the entire facility to enhance network reliability.
- Deploying fast fibre optics to deliver high-speed, future-ready connectivity across the site.
- Upgrading and expanding the WiFi network with high-performance Ruckus Networks equipment.
- Implementing a robust internet and on-premise Mitel OpenScape Business voice solution tailored to the needs of aged care residents.
- Establishing a Technology Service Agreement (TSA) to provide ongoing priority support and maintenance.
The Result
The upgrade delivered a seamless, high-speed internet and phone system, significantly improving the connectivity experience for both residents and staff.
Over 80% of residents now use the system, enjoying reliable access with minimal interruptions.
The facility has reduced its dependence on multiple external service providers, allowing for better in-house control over telecommunication services. Health care is a mission-critical service, particularly in times of connectivity or power issues, making system reliability essential.
